How Tiny Chef Helped Me Find Happiness Again

Posted on February 21, 2026May 31, 2026 by Justin Calabrese

There was a time in my life when everything felt heavy.

If you’ve followed my journey, you know I’ve faced mental health struggles. I’ve confronted people who hurt me. I’ve wrestled with faith, identity, leadership, expectations, and the weight of being “strong” for everyone else. Healing didn’t happen overnight. It wasn’t a breakthrough moment. It was a series of quiet decisions to keep going.

Today, I’m pursuing my doctorate at South College. I’m building, writing, teaching, leading. On paper, it may look like momentum.

But healing didn’t come from accomplishment.

It came from something much simpler.

A tiny animated chef.

I discovered Tiny Chef a few years ago while casually browsing Instagram. I don’t even remember what I was searching for. But I remember stopping.

There he was. Small. Green. Wearing heart-shaped glasses. Speaking in that high-pitched, joyful voice that somehow sounds both fragile and brave at the same time.

Innocent. Passionate. Funny. Fully himself.

And something in me softened.

It sounds almost ridiculous to admit that an animated character became part of my healing process. But when you’ve walked through darker seasons of life, you learn not to dismiss the things that make you smile.

When Chef hurts, I feel it.
When Chef laughs, I laugh.
When Chef gets excited about a tiny recipe in his tiny kitchen, something in me remembers what simple joy feels like.

He doesn’t pretend to be anything he’s not. He’s small — but bold. Emotional — but not ashamed of it. Passionate — but gentle. There’s something powerful about watching someone (even fictional) move through feelings without losing their softness.

And maybe that’s what I needed to relearn.

For years, I believed strength meant hardness. That leadership meant composure. That success meant stoicism.

But healing taught me something else.

Strength can look like tenderness.
Leadership can include vulnerability.
Success can include childlike joy.

I even have a Tiny Chef stuffed animal that rides shotgun in my Lotus every time I go out for a drive. Yes — the Lotus. The sports car. The “adult” machine. And sitting beside me is a tiny plush chef with heart-shaped glasses.

And I don’t hide it.

Because that little reminder represents something bigger: I survived and I chose joy.

Mental health recovery isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s choosing not to numb yourself. Sometimes it’s allowing yourself to laugh at something innocent. Sometimes it’s letting a fictional chef remind you that you’re allowed to feel.

I’ve confronted the people who hurt me. I’ve done the hard conversations. I’ve grown. I’ve pursued new challenges. The doctorate is part of that next chapter.

But the real victory?

I didn’t let pain turn me cold. Tiny Chef didn’t save my life. But he reminded me how to smile again.

And sometimes, that’s more than enough.
