A Night Among the Stars: Our 5th Anniversary at Kitt Peak National Observatory

Posted on November 11, 2025November 12, 2025 by Justin Calabrese

Anniversaries are a time for reflection — a chance to look back on where you’ve been and dream about what’s ahead. For our 5th anniversary, we wanted to do something unforgettable, something that would take us out of the everyday and remind us just how small and miraculous this world (and universe) really is. That’s how we ended up at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, perched high above the Sonoran Desert in Arizona.

I had planned the vacation — the flights, the hotel, the rental car, the stops along the way — but my partner surprised me with the tour of Kitt Peak. And let me tell you, it was out of this world (literally and figuratively).

The drive up to the observatory felt like an adventure in itself. Winding roads carried us through cacti-covered slopes and open desert vistas that seemed to stretch on forever. As we climbed higher, the sky began to open up in a way that only the Arizona desert can offer — vast, deep, and humbling. When we finally reached the top, it felt like we were standing at the edge of the heavens.

The staff at Kitt Peak were some of the most passionate, kind-hearted people I’ve met on any trip. You could tell immediately that they loved what they did. They spoke about the telescopes like old friends and treated visitors as fellow explorers. It didn’t matter if you were an astronomer or a complete novice — everyone was welcomed with the same warmth and excitement.

Our tour began right before sunset. The air was crisp and calm, and as the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky exploded into color — fiery oranges fading into deep purples and soft pinks that slowly surrendered to night. I remember standing there, hand in hand with my partner, watching the last light disappear while the first stars began to peek through. It was one of those rare moments where time seemed to pause.

Once darkness fell, the real magic began. We were led inside one of the telescopes — an incredible structure of steel and precision that looked like something out of a science-fiction film. As the dome rotated and the telescope adjusted, we all fell silent, waiting for our turn to look through the eyepiece. When it was finally my turn, I peered inside and saw the moon in stunning, almost surreal clarity — every crater, ridge, and shadow perfectly visible. And then… Saturn.Rings and all. Floating in the darkness like a jewel suspended in space. It was humbling. Beautiful. Almost spiritual.

For a few seconds, it felt like the rest of the world disappeared — no emails, no schedules, no noise — just me, my partner, and the universe.

We ended the evening under a sky overflowing with stars, wrapped in blankets and listening to the astronomers explain constellations, galaxies, and nebulae millions of light-years away. It was both grounding and uplifting, a reminder that while we are small, our love, our experiences, and our curiosity make life immeasurably meaningful.

As we drove back down the mountain, I looked over at my partner — the one who had planned this unforgettable experience — and smiled. The stars above us felt like they were celebrating too.

If you ever find yourself in Arizona, take the time to visit Kitt Peak National Observatory. Whether you’re a science lover, a romantic, or simply someone who enjoys seeing the world from a new perspective, it’s an experience that stays with you long after the night ends.

Because some anniversaries deserve more than a candlelit dinner — they deserve the universe.
